Foaming hand soap is one of the easiest products I make for our home. It takes just a minute or two to refill the dispenser, and one bottle of concentrated Castile soap lasts through quite a few batches.Â
I like starting with unscented Castile soap and changing the scent throughout the year. Orange essential oil is one of my favorites for spring and summer, while I usually reach for peppermint in the fall and winter. You can experiment with whatever scents you enjoy or leave the essential oils out completely.
You can also skip adding your own essential oils and simply buy a scented Castile soap. Dr. Bronner’s currently makes its liquid Castile soap in several scented varieties, including Citrus and Peppermint, along with its fragrance-free Baby Unscented version.
WHAT DO THE INGREDIENTS DO
CASTILE SOAP
Castile soap is a concentrated vegetable-oil-based soap that does the actual cleaning in this recipe. Diluting it with water makes it the right consistency for my foaming dispenser while still providing plenty of soap for everyday hand washing.
I usually buy Baby Unscented Castile Soap because it gives me the option to leave the finished soap completely unscented or add whichever essential oil I’m in the mood for.
WATER
Regular tap water works, although distilled, reverse-osmosis, or softened water can give you a clearer-looking mixture. Hard water may make diluted Castile soap look cloudy, but this cloudiness is harmless.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils are completely optional and are here simply to customize the scent.
I love orange during the spring and summer and peppermint during fall and winter, but this is an easy recipe to make your own. Try different scents, use a pre-scented Castile soap, or leave your soap fragrance-free. If you have sensitive or very dry skin, keeping the soap unscented may be the better option.
A SIMPLE FORMULA
This foaming hand soap is intentionally simple: concentrated Castile soap, water, and an optional scent.
Rather than buying a new ready-to-use bottle each time we run out, I can keep one bottle of concentrated Castile soap and use it to refill our foaming dispensers again and again. I also get to decide exactly how I want it scented—or leave it completely unscented.
That’s what I like most about simple homemade products like this one. I don’t need a complicated formula for something we use every day; I just want a soap that cleans our hands, is easy to refill, and gives me control over what goes into the bottle.

Foaming Hand Soap
EQUITMENT
- Foaming Soap Dispenser mason jar & lid
- Measuring cup
INGREDIENTS
- 1/4 cup castile soap
- 1 1/4 cup water
- 20-30 drops essential oil optional
DIRECTIONS
- Measure 1/4 cup Castile soap directly into a clean 12-ounce mason jar.
- Add 1 1/4 cups water, or fill the jar with water to the appropriate level
- Add essential oil, if using.
- Attach the foaming soap pump lid and gently swirl to combine.
HOW TO USE
Pump the foaming soap onto wet hands, lather thoroughly, and rinse clean with water.
This recipe is made specifically for a foaming soap dispenser. The pump mixes the diluted soap with air as it is dispensed, which is what creates the foam.
HOW TO STORE IT
I make one dispenser at a time rather than preparing a large amount of diluted soap to store.
Because water is being added to the concentrated Castile soap, I keep the dispenser clean, avoid topping off an old batch indefinitely, and wash the bottle between refills.
Store the soap at normal room temperature and replace it if you notice an unusual change in its smell, appearance, or texture.
MACHINES BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY
Dishwashers, water hardness, wash temperatures, and cycles vary quite a bit from one home to another. I always recommend trying the recipe with your normal load and adjusting the amount if needed.
FAQs
Can I Use a Regular Soap Dispenser?
I wouldn’t use this particular dilution in a regular soap pump. The extra water is what makes it work well with a foaming dispenser. Although any foaming dispenser will do.
Why Does My Soap Look Cloudy?
Depending on your water and Castile soap, the mixture may not stay perfectly clear. This can be especially noticeable if you have hard water.
If appearance matters to you, distilled water is another option.
Does Homemade Foaming Hand Soap Work as Well as Regular Hand Soap?
Yes. Castile soap is still soap, and when used with water and proper handwashing, it helps lift dirt, oils, and germs from your hands so they can be rinsed away. You don’t need an antibacterial hand soap for normal everyday handwashing—plain soap and water are effective.
Is Castile Soap Drying on Your Hands?
I personally find this diluted foaming soap comfortable for frequent handwashing and less drying than many of the heavily scented hand soaps I’ve used. Castile soap also retains naturally occurring glycerin from the soapmaking process, which helps give it a softer feel on the skin.
