Homemade Laundry Booster

HOMEMADE LAUNDRY BOOSTER POWDER

September 16, 2026

This powdered laundry booster is something I use alongside my [homemade liquid laundry detergent] in almost every load. My detergent handles the everyday washing, while this powder gives it a little extra help with odors, stains, dinginess, and the minerals in our wash water.

I like keeping the two separate because each formula has its own job. Instead of trying to pack everything into one detergent, I can keep my liquid laundry detergent simple and add this booster directly to the wash.

The recipe is a completely dry powder, takes only a couple of minutes to mix together, and is easy to keep in a jar beside the washing machine.

WHAT DO THE INGREDIENTS DO

WASHING SODA

Washing soda is the main ingredient in this booster. It increases the alkalinity of the wash water, which helps loosen soils, grease, and everyday grime and gives your laundry detergent a better environment to work in.

BAKING SODA

Baking soda is a milder alkaline ingredient that adds some extra cleaning and deodorizing support. I especially like it for towels, bedding, and everyday laundry where odors can build up over time.

OXYGEN BLEACH

Oxygen bleach adds extra stain-fighting and brightening power without using traditional chlorine bleach. It is especially helpful for dinginess, food stains, sweat, and everyday laundry messes.

The type I use is typically made from sodium percarbonate, which breaks down in water into hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate.

So despite the word “bleach,” it is very different from chlorine bleach. It doesn’t contain sodium hypochlorite and instead relies on oxygen released from hydrogen peroxide to help lift stains and brighten laundry.

SODIUM CITRATE

Sodium citrate helps bind minerals in hard water so they are less able to interfere with the cleaning process.

Hard-water minerals can make detergent work harder and can contribute to residue or dinginess over time, so this is one of my favorite ingredients to include in laundry recipes.

A SIMPLE FORMULA

This laundry booster is intentionally simple. Washing soda provides the stronger alkaline base, baking soda adds deodorizing and cleaning support, oxygen bleach helps tackle stains and dinginess, and sodium citrate helps manage minerals in the wash water.

Commercial laundry boosters can contain additional fragrances, dyes, surfactants, brighteners, and other additives depending on what they are designed to do. I prefer this simpler formula because I know exactly what is in it and each ingredient has a specific purpose.

HOW TO USE

I use this laundry booster alongside my [homemade liquid laundry detergent], not in place of it.

For a normal or lightly soiled load, add 2 tablespoons laundry booster. For a heavily soiled load, add 4 tablespoons laundry booster.

Add the powder directly to the washer drum, then use your normal amount of liquid laundry detergent in the detergent compartment and wash as usual.

Always check garment care instructions, especially for delicate or specialty fabrics.

HOW TO STORE IT

Store the laundry booster in a clean, dry, airtight container somewhere cool and away from moisture.

Always use a dry scoop and close the container after each use. Keep the powder dry until it goes directly into the washing machine.

MACHINES BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY

Washing machines can vary quite a bit in how much water they use, how long they agitate, and how well powders dissolve. Water hardness, load size, and wash temperature can also affect how this booster performs.

I recommend starting with 2 tablespoons for a normal load and adjusting from there if needed. If you notice powder residue, try using a little less, choosing a warmer wash when appropriate, or checking your machine’s instructions for where powdered additives should be placed.

FAQs

Can I Use This in Every Load?

I use it in most of our everyday washable laundry.

Because it contains oxygen bleach and washing soda, I still check fabric-care labels and use more caution with delicate or specialty fabrics.

Is This Safe for Colored Clothes?

I use it with many of our colorfast washable clothes, but dyes and fabrics can vary. If you are unsure about an item, spot test first and follow the garment’s care instructions.

Why Did My Powder Get Hard or Clumpy?

Moisture probably got into the container. Make sure the lid closes tightly and never put a damp scoop back into the powder.

Can I Skip the Laundry Detergent and Use This Alone?

I would not.

This recipe is a booster, not a complete detergent. It does not replace the surfactants in laundry detergent that help lift and carry away oils and dirt.

For the best results, I use it alongside my [homemade liquid laundry detergent].
